Minosin Kikiwa – “A Good Home”: Indigenous Older Adults in Winnipeg

A growing segment of Indigenous populations in Canada are over 55.
In urban areas like Winnipeg, this includes many long-time city residents.
The later life situations of Indigenous older adults, though by no means
identical, can differ in important ways from non-Indigenous older adults.
In the fall of 2022, two local Indigenous community leaders, Lucille Bruce
and Joanne Mason, formed our Indigenous Seniors Research Committee. We
wanted to learn from Indigenous seniors in Winnipeg to understand their
housing and care experiences, needs, and preferences. We also wanted to
bring people together to think about different models of housing and support
and use this research to advocate for better living conditions and quality
of life, from a holistic, culturally-informed perspective.
