In response to the persistent lack of public funding to address poverty, trauma, and addictions, Winnipeg inner-city leaders are calling on the City of Winnipeg, Province of Manitoba, and Government of Canada to renew investment in equitable social and economic development in Winnipeg’s inner city. This call to action is being launched today in conjunction with the 2024 State of the Inner City report, titled “Visioning a Just Transformation in Winnipeg’s Inner City,” released today at 11:00 a.m.

The pandemic, combined with several years of austerity funding from government, has resulted in growing housing and food insecurity across the inner city. Community-based organizations at the front lines of the overdose crisis are struggling help those in need and do important community development work. Inner-city organizations—which have long struggled with underfunding and limited capacity—are feeling the pressure of increased demand for resources and services. The community is calling to lead the intervention with investments and support from all levels of government.

The 2024 State of the Inner City Report spotlights the urgent need for a comprehensive transformation to support social and economic justice in Winnipeg’s inner city. This year’s report emphasizes the importance of recognizing the Indigenous right to self-determination and calls for substantial community-based actions to address ongoing issues of homelessness, poverty, and the lingering impacts of colonialism.
