This report tallies the four parties’ own estimates of their campaign promises to cut taxes, repay the debt, and inrease spending. The costs of these promises are then compared ot the parties’ own estimates of the surplus they have to work with. It finds that the Liberals and the Alliance would plunge the country’s finances back into another deficit if they carry out their promised election platform. In sharp contrast, the Progressive Conservatives and the New Democratic Party appear to offer the most “fiscally responsible” platforms.
