Blackberry: The Rollercoaster Ride That's Far From Over

The news that Blackberry could soon be bought up by Fairfax is an interesting twist in the Canadian tech darling's ongoing saga, and a faint light at the end of the tunnel for Ontario's economy, and for the Waterloo region in particular.

The proposed "take-under" just might stop the bleed that led the company to recently announce it would lay off 40% of it staff -- a move that will most certainly send shockwaves through the region's employment numbers, even more so for youth already suffering much higher rates of joblessness.

CCPA's Senior Economist David MacDonald contributed this post to the CCPA blog, stressing the need for federal sectoral development strategies and some specifics as to what that might look like for the tech sector. David debated these points on Power and Politics.

And Senior Economist Armine Yalnizian takes us on the rollercoaster ride that is Blackberry's recent past, and possible future, suggesting that those phrophesying Blackberry's demise just might be proven wrong
