(OTTAWA) The desperate need for electricity in the U.S. is a powerful force behind the privatization of electricity in Canada, according to a new study released today. Written by economist Marjorie Griffin Cohen for the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the study -- "From Public Good to Private Exploitation" -- says that the U.S. drive for a continental electricity market is in danger of succeeding because of the lucrative revenues that are possible as increasing proportions of Canadian electricity goes to the U.S.
(Vancouver) BC's natural gas producers are reaping huge rewards from a hot continental energy market, a new CCPA study shows. "Who's making money on natural gas and what should governments do?" finds that the province's natural gas producers are the greatest beneficiaries of the current situation. Much attention has been focused on provincial royalty income, yet curiously absent from public scrutiny are the natural gas producers.
(Vancouver) A report released today by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives finds that offshore oil and gas development off BC's coast will not bring the hoped for levels of wealth or job creation to the province. Should BC Lift the Oil Moratorium? Economic Lessons from Hibernia draws on the Newfoundland experience to determine what British Columbians might expect from lifting the offshore oil moratorium.

(Vancouver) The BC government claims that changes to BC Hydro under its new Energy Plan are relatively minor. They are nothing of the sort--the changes will radically and irrevocably change the nature of BC Hydro. That's the conclusion of a new paper by SFU professor Marjorie Griffin Cohen entitled Gutting a Power House: BC Hydro and the new Energy Plan, released today by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.
